Nove, a town in the area surrounding Vicenza, in Venice hinterland, near Bassano del Grappa, has been famous since the 18th century for its production of artistic pottery. The supply of raw materials from the subsoil and the presence of many watercourses are some of the factors that have promoted the development of craftsmanship in these places. In the 17th century the increasing request and diffusion in Europe of precious Chinese pottery forced Dutch potters to imitate their production, so invading the markets of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, too. Thanks to a series of measures and benefits taken by the Venice Senate that craftsmans’ ceramic and porcelain tradition has flourished in Nove, which has made it unique in the centuries to follow.
